I would like to make it so my members can chose an avatar when they first register. This will make my board look better (with all the pics) and prolly attract more people

Does anybody have a working hack for this? I tried looking at message history about this but no luck

That's a part of the new upcoming release, v2.2.0.
Wait a bit and you'll see.

i just set avatar choosing level to 0 posts and new members get to choose an avatar anyway
