Attachments for Guests
Hello friends,
I searched for this solution on the web but didn't find any solution. I'm allowing members of the forum to attach files (specific extension) in threads and replies. I have disabled the download of the files for guests but this totally hides the download link and guests can't view the attachment section. Now my question is, how I can show the attached file (download link) to guests without allowing them to download the file unless they register on forum? I hope you will guide me in right direction. Thanks for your support in advance. |

The only way to view an image is if they are allowed to download it to their computer. That is the way browsers work. So, if you don't allow them to download, then they cannot view the images. The only way for them to view the images is if you allow them to download them.

Hello Lynne, thanks for reply. But the attachments aren't images. They are in .apk format (Android apps). I have seen in some forums that the attachment link is visible but when we click that link, we are asked to either sign in or signup! Is this possible for us to enable in vBulletin 5? Or any custom code?

So, you want them to see a link to the .apk file, but then click it and get the "You must register to view this file" type page? I do not know of a modification that does that in vB5. If you have Can download non-image attachments set to No, then it simply doesn't show the link. You may be able to edit the template, but I have never tried that.
To find the template to modify, do this - vboptions > General Settings > Add Template Name in HTML Comments > set to Yes . Then go back to your page and view the source code and you will see the name of the template called around your part of the code. (Sometimes the template is the one mentioned at the very top of the page source.) |

Yes exactly, I want to achieve that. BTW I've disabled download for non-registered users and the link hides. Thank you for your help, I'll be playing around the code to see if I find something working. I was hoping if VB5 is providing any such feature inbuilt. Again thanks.
