On my forums, some users cannot update their avatars. It only seems to affect a certain several people (not users who haven't used an avatar in the past, and not users who've always kept a small avatar, I believe)

This is a user who has an avatar. The two avatars displayed differ.

When changing his avatar, it updates properly on his profile view and activity, but does not update in postbit or the welcome message (as seen above); instead, it just morphs the dimensions of the original avatar.

Already tried maintenance, removing the avatar, etc. Any ideas?

So, it looks like the thumbnail avatar isn't getting updated? Are the avatars stored in the database or the filesystem? Have you tried rebuilding them under Maintenance > General Update Tools?
