I am trying to have a closed beta period for my website before officially launching it.

is this possible?

I wanted to invite 20-25 people to join, and post/use the site but still keep it closed to most of the public.

is this possible? with an addon, or by default with vB 4.2.2?

You could put the site behind .htaccess password protection and only give out the u/p to your beta users.
