Default Notifications - challenging Facebook

Having recently created a Facebook group to run alongside my forum after I closed it (short-term), one thing I noticed was the constant activity.

I think one of the reason for this is the automatic notifications, how they work and the devices people utilise

So how can I/we improve forum content to challenge Facebook because I hear from so many people how these groups have impacted on forum content and activity.

One of the tricks I think is to negate by default people manually subscribing but at the same time notifying them with clogging up the contact system in vB.

Any thoughts?

To be fair, with Facebook being the dominant social network site they sign into each day (because of all the features it has, and the fact everyone seems to be on it) I think it's becoming increasingly difficult to challenge its power over users. Even default subscriptions doesn't have the impact as people tend to open facebook out of habit, whereas a forum they have to be feeling the urge to participate and log in to even see them.

Maybe have like some exclusive content on the forum, or a rewards system so posts or content creation is reinforced. See the reinforcement of FB is notifications and likes, so I'd say your best bet is to try one up that system (without going overly complicated however).

Thanks for that, I think the exclusive path is probably the way to go coupled with broader content.
