Private Message Link - Notification

I'm wanting to give members who don't want to receive notifications the option to turn it off. But I still need to be able to have them see that they have a PM.

Is there anyway to make the Private Messages link (vbflink_pms) in the navbar change style if there is a new PM?

Or even better, is there a way I can add a DIV which only appears when a message is unread with a message saying "You have X PM's unread, click here etc."
