how to change default page after login?

4.2.1, what mod or is there, anything that you can edit to change where users are directed to by default instead of the 'Activity Stream'... looking to make a custom page and have that show first.

After successfull login the user is redirecting to the page where he was when he enter his login details and clicked "Login".
But if you mean how to change the first page where your site visitors will go when entering your site you need to edit index.php file.

You don't need to edit anything.

Go to ACP->Settings->Options->Navigation Manager. Choose the tab you want to be the default page for the site. Where it says 'Edit' click on that and select 'Set Default'.

I cannot find how to set default in 4.2.2

When you first go to the Navigation Manager, see on the right side for each tab it has a dropdown menu, click on that and select, Set Default
