Really. What do you think?
I constantly see this totally unrealistic "I want lists" posted here, but this is my favorite so far and it really made me laugh. I stripped all information regarding the poster so I am not advertising for him. I also never do side jobs so I am not advertising for myself either.
All he wants is 7 mods and you can get 45-60 dollars! Some of what he is looking for is quite simple, but of course he would want this fully tested, probably installed and make sure it works with my other mods before I will pay you. Wow, that really pays for the additional 60 hours I put in a month to stay up on new technologies. Evidently as a professional engineer with a PhD, I could work for far less than minimum wage. Really? What do you think? Quote:

2 days custom work (as it's not something that can be use in public): 500 Euros. For $40-$60 as you said, I'm not even opening my editor to write <?php

Some members have no idea the time it takes to code things or the cost

"Yeah, really!"
Honestly we all have different rates, different locations and lifestyles to accompany such. With that being said rates vary. Rough Example Estimate on the above list: US/UK Based Developer - $250 to $500+/- Non US Based Developer - $25 to $50+/- Why? Well again it's location, overhead, and is this a work from home developer or one that works for a company - are you paying the cost a company assigns to their products and services or an individuals? There are various factors and I always compare web work and such to automobiles... you want a new or used car, each dealership is different in costs and warranties/services etc so naturally something of this caliber can vary greatly including the quality of the work performed. Now with all that ^ being said... does this mean your getting a better job done for the $500 - Certainly not, I've seen some quotes of the same job just like my example above and the non-us based developer since someone trusted them to do the job, did it well and for only $50. Can you trust everyone? No but sometimes a leap of faith as they say can land you a good developer who works hard for the money they know pays the bills and is fair to them respectively. Some coders can work 8 hours a day for $50 and some cannot, it all boils down to whom you trust to do the job well and if they can complete it within your budget AND timeframe. My 2 cents. |

I believe that there many other factors to determine each coder what rates he/she will has. eg as for me: I know that by getting 250 Euros a day is a big amount. Especially if you compare it with the fact that my daughter, 33 years old currently, and with 14 years of work at Airlines, her salary dropped down to 235 Euros a month (for 4 hours work a day). So, yes, I have high rates. But why? 1.- I had no luck to study. Not because I didn't wanted it, or not because I was not good student. But lack of money. Being elder child in a 5 children family, there were no money for studies. So I started working to help my family. But half of my money I was spending to buy books for computers and programming. What I know now is not because I studied in the best College, neigther because I had good professor. It's because I loved it. You're reading my text now. Is it understandable? Not high level in English language and maybe poor vocabulary. But when I started reading English books I had 2 problems. First to understand what the book says and second to try to learn the programming language. I spent years for learning. For years I was not going to holidays/vacations just to keep that money to buy books. More and more books. Money to spend for buying software. So, yes. I want to get that money back. I can't get back the years that I spent reading. I'll never get the feeling of being 22.. or 25... or even 30 years. Because I didn't really lived that years. No vacations as I said, no clubing, not even cinema. 2.- I work in an open market. Why to ask for 100 Euros a day, while I have clients waiting 2 and 3 months in the queue to start their project? I'll ask more. It's normal. Another reason is the experiance. Why to ask the same price with someone having 2-3 years experiance while I've 29 years?? This is my "2 cents". But for sure the cost of life in Greece, believe me, is much higher than USA or UK. Especially in USA, I've many relatives in LA, so I do know very well many things. And you know where is the difference? That the cost of life is something that you can control there. What I mean... This A area has $1000 monthly rental. But the area B has $700. Here there are no such differencies. Anywhere if you go, you'll find crazy owners asking the same rental. That's why we have a common joke when someone asks incredible rentals. "My dear owner, you didn't understood me. I want to rent it and not to buy it". |

I assume, what he meant when he said non US developer, was possibly someone from a country where the cost of 25-50 USD goes a heck of a lot further.

@Christos - No I'm not totally wrong, move to North Carolina USA and purchase a home, now move to New York USA and purchase the same home and it cost roughly 2-5x more plain and simple, this is evident and fact across the world based on location. Web work is not realty that is for sure but like my automobile example it sure does make sense. You hire someone who lives in New York, they will want more $ for time spent otherwise they can't pay the bills, rent/house payment being one of the highest of them all, if they work for a company based out of NY they are paid more per hour than someone working for a company based out of NC. You keep asking that much Christos, it's your prerogative based on my 2 cents previously posted lol but know this, someone from for example North Korea can do the same job, for less money and better than you, we all have someone capable of doing our job better and they will if given the chance and having clients wait too long means some of them go elsewhere, that's just patience being a virtue and fact as well. |

Actually the upper limit for what's quoted is closer to $75 USD, but still that's low for 7 mods.
This is why I read the paid mod section, usually have a good laugh and move on to other things. When I price a mod, there's a lot I take into consideration. How many times can I resell it? Is it a repeat client requesting the mod? How much time will the mod take? And then, of course what kind of mood I'm in. But, there's always someone who doesn't realize what the going rates are and will do the work for less. |

My point in writing the initial post was to try to educate those that are requesting paid work. I thought if the developers around here posted their thinking it might help adjust peoples real world expectations and they would be happier. This was on my mind because last week I tried to help a gentleman who was trying to accomplish a list of things. I explained that he should probably break up his project list and only tackle a single project at a time. I suggested he post what code he had and that there were quite a few of us that like to help others at this level. Well he decided to get a little excited about the issue. I believe he was really just looking for a handout -- I could be wrong, but I haven't seen a new post from him since then. I do see a little social engineering around here, there are a few members that have learned to prey on some of the good natured members around here. -- It is not my place to judge, only my opinion.
@nhawk, I think the original post said 30-40 British pounds. So I just based it off the exchange rates. Maybe I was wrong about the British pound, I posted late at night. Great replies everyone |
