Make prefix selection like posticons for new threads

I'd like to have the prefix selection mirror the posticons. So on the newthread page I'd like a box with radio buttons above the title box rather than a drop-down next to it. I've dug around the functions_prefix.php file but I'm not sure how to best go about altering (or rewriting) the fetch_prefix_html function to accomplish what I want to do. Any insight would be appreciated.
