Removing extra space between message and signature

I tried this edit:

Which definitely removes the space, but also pops the signature up right beneath the text. This looks weird when there's now extra space below the signature.

Is there a way to bottom-align the signature with this template edit?

Someone posted a method using tables, but I would really rather avoid that if possible.
