Recent post forum block - avatar problems
Hi everyone,
I've spent hours today up on this topic and trying to mess around with PHP a bit, but nothing has worked so I hope someone here can point me in the right direction. I have enabled a forum block that uses one of the default vB functions of recent threads organized by "new replies". It works great except for one remaining problem - the avatar thumbnails belong to the OP of the thread and don't change to the user who posted last, which is very confusing and already getting complaints from my users. I found a way to delete the thumbnails altogether but it looks empty like that so I hope there is a way to have the avatar thumbnails correspond to the user who wrote the last post. Any ideas? |

Go to Maintenance > General Update Tools > Rebuild Custom Avatar Thumbnails . If that doesn't work, please let us know if there was any error during the rebuild and if there is anything in the error_logs (if you don't know where they are, ask your host).

I just did that but it didn't think it was necessary. From the beginning the avatars haven't updated so I thought it's just the way the code works but maybe not? Are the avatars supposed to change with the the users as new posts are made?

The block uses avatar *thumbnails*. If you don't have the directory set to chmod 777, then you are going to get broken images.

Let me try once more and I apologize for not making this clear from the start: 1) User X makes a new thread. It shows up in the forum block as a new thread and since it's an update it goes to the top of the queue. It also shows a thumbnail of user X's avatar. 2) User Y responds to that same thread. The forum block shows that the thread has been updated and has 1 reply from user Y but the avatar next to this information is still user X's. In fact it will never change. On my site we know each other's avatars fairly well so this is becoming a bit frustrating because we can't trust the avatar image next to an update as coming from that user. This should be easy enough to change but I am not capable of doing it from my failed attempts today. I tried editing the template Block_threads as well as the actual .php file in the block folder but there are too many variables for me to make sense of and it's not clear which one I should replace. |

Ah, I see. You would actually need to modify the code. I think this has been posted about before and it was determined you couldn't modify the actual query and that you would actually have to add one query per thread/reply to the page in order to get the avatar.
