Default Why now?

vBulletin 5's beta being released to the public at this point in time is very strange. Of course all of the usual things popped into my head justifying it, but yesterday, something hit me.

As most people will agree, focus seemed to shift from the forum to things like the publishing suite and mobile support. What is strange is that even for being in beta, vBulletin 5 is very basic. If you look at the vB5 response threads, more than frustrated, people are very surprised.

I was reading up on the California Internet Brands/vB vs XenForo lawsuit, and saw that in June, the judge had enough of IB's delay tactics, denied their motion to amend, and started moving towards a trial.

IB losing this lawsuit will of course have a domino effect. This can very simply mean that IB did not expect things to proceed this quickly, and they are moving towards a more vanilla model. This way, when the trial ends and confidence is restored in people to move towards xenForo, IB hopes to impress upon them "we have the same thing".

---

Of course the last paragraph is conjecture, but it makes a lot of sense. What do you guys think?

I'm guessing they pushed it out now to get more feedback, more reported bugs and to improve the script quicker.
They have been pushing out nightly builds for a few months now..

Firstly, I remember many of threads like this has been closed at vbulletin.com. Don't know if it will be different here at vbulletin.org

Whatever IB are trying to do with the lawsuit with xenforo they seems that gained some benefits already.

Since these developers at xenforo used all the money they earned for selling license to protect themself again IB. IB have a much more resources to have a long-term lawsuit case. They are a giant company vs a new start-up.

And may you noticed already, from the last 3 months there are absolutely no big update and informations from these dev far from how they started. The guys at xenforo started complaining and wondering about the xenforo's future and stable. That's why I said IB already won at some points.

I will wait until the lawsuit ends and trust me, it will be a huge changes for both compaines regarding the final result.

If discussion of the lawsuit continues yes, it will get closed.

It has no relevance to vb.org, and they always end up as mud slinging threads.

They've already said it was a mistake to publish the vb 5 demo in it's current state. (Dunno if that meant the emptiness/lack of features or the general performance issues who knows). But they have admitted it's a mistake, they're working to fix it. and it is still beta for what thats worth.

Really you live and learn, it shouldn't have been a surprise based off past experiences, and just like past experiences im sure they'll work to improve it.

the release of the first beta of 5.0 was ALWAYS planned for end of 2012, based on all discussions we had with Ray and the others back in 2009...

vanilla version... in the era we are, it's just normal to follow the mood..... facebook, twitter, wordpress, etc... they are all vanilla... eye-candy poping is way faster to do with vanilla than with the old ways.

i would say that 5.0 is nothing more than what 50% of the coders here wished since vB 3.5 ...
