How to use wildcards in "Automatic Tagger From Message Content and Title"?

<a href="https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?p=2301949" target="_blank">This modification</a> is good for automatic adding of tags represented by related words. It is quite good, but several very important features are still missing. I contacted the author but he did not reply.

Does anyone know how to tweak this modification to let the users use wildcards as related words?
for example:

Tag: category
Related word: cat*

This means that if anything starting with "cat" is posted, the tag "category" is added to the current thread.

Does anyone know how to implement this function?
I am not a vB programmer but I know some basics of PHP.
