This is a mean little trick I just discovered on a news/article site...

It's called a "Like gate", and I think it's actually a really good idea for getting likes to your Facebook page. That same idea could be applied to forum threads. Perhaps it could pop up after an unregistered user views x threads.

My first thought is Google might consider this content cloaking and get upset if someone reports the site. (Assuming you care about Google search traffic.)
