I'm trying to remove the two columns I've surrounded in red below, the two left-most on (I think) the search_results template. I've removed the two <td> tags in what I thought was the correct template but then the content shifts to the wrong cells after the changes are saved. Been trying to figure it out for a while, unsuccessfully. Must be easy! Any tips?

I believe you need to edit two templates - search_results and threadbit. In the threadbit template, you will need to put a condition around it to say to only remove those columns if THIS_SCRIPT == 'search'
