Default More poll issues!

Since we upgraded to VB my members have really got some issues regarding posting polls.

I can see their point, I can't see for the life of my why there are so many "rules" when it comes to creating polls

- You can't add a poll to a thread that you have already created.
- You can't edit the poll title once you have posted it, or change the number of options etc
- You can't delete the poll and make a new one.
- Users can't change their votes once they have voted.

Sorry but this is driving us all mad, I mean, why on earth is it like this? Can anything be done about it? Does it not bother anyone else?

You can, actually. In your vB Settings there's a time limit on editing Polls that you can completely disable if you want.

I don't believe so.

Well, Polls are essentially treated like posts in many ways. So that would be tied to posting permissions. Deletion would essentially delete the thread.

That's also an option under Settings. (EDIT: My mistake. The option I'm thinking of is only for changing thread ratings.)

Thanks for your reply.

I can't disable the time limit to edit a poll, the best I can do is make it 9999999999999 minutes (this is the same for editing a title which again is really silly IMO and needs a disable function.) Many of my members have long running threads (running for months if not years) like diaries etc that they want to change the title / poll indefinitely and I don't have a problem with allowing it.

Re: the poll deleting, all I want to really do is to let them change the poll. For example we're bound to get a huge thread on big brother, with debates etc along the way. The first post will usually have a poll "who do you want to evict this week" which we'd want to edit each week with the names of the relevant contestants.
When we had phpbb before, a member could simply delete the poll and create a new one, not affecting the first post at all.

Sorry to sound a grump but I was really liking this new software until this whole poll issue came up and I can't see any good reason for it to be the way it is.

I have mine set to 0, and I believe that disables it.

The nature of your forum is somewhat unique in that you allow a lot of flexibility with your threads. I've found that to be the opposite of most forums, since constant alteration of old threads would affect, not just the search results of people finding your site off of search engines, but your own internal search. Meaning it's somewhat harder to search for a thread or for information you remember reading once, because that info could have easily been altered. I'd venture to say you're the first person I've heard of who use threads and polls that flexibly.

Also, what you might be looking for is more likely found in the functionality of the blog. Since threads, by design, are generally meant to be permanent, or removed over time.

As far as I know, setting it to "0" means users are unable to edit at all. I had it set to that by default and had to change it.

I'm not really fussed about editing affecting search, users looking on google for my forum won't be searching for those kinds of threads anyway, and internal search being affected would just be something we'd put up with.

oh, and I will be enabling blogs as soon as other teething issues are ironed out so yeah that will solve a few people's issues, but not others.

Thanks anyway
