Help modifying block_threads template

On my site, I use the Threads With New Replies sidebar block to show the latest replies. I like it a lot better than the New Replies block, because I don't want to see every single post, just the individual threads. However, the Threads block could be significantly improved to make it work better as a condensed version of the new replies block. Specifically, there are two things that I am trying to change:

1) I want the block to display the last poster's avatar, not the thread creator's avatar.
2) I want the link to the thread to direct to the last post, not the first post.

I am not a coder and do not understand php well enough to make these modifications myself. If there are any kind souls out there who know how to make these two changes, you would make me a very happy guy.
