Works for: vBulletin 3.7 + and vBulletin 4+

Allow users to login to your forum with:

EMAIL ADDRESS + PASSWORD

OR

USERNAME + PASSWORD

For advanced users:
*This modification can also check and validate a different password encryption algorithm ; that code can be left alone or commented out. This is for advanced users who import a non-vbulletin forum into vbulletin and would like to validate passwords using a different method.

Hm looks rather dirty-hacky to me, are you sure this is the only way to accomplish this functionality?

Why don't you test for an email and query the username according to that email and replace it with the username before you check if the credentials were wrong. Then you wouldn't need to crack the salt also.

However, it seems to do what it's made for. Appreciate your effort.

How hard would it be to implement that modification or approach into this?

Or create a whole new plugin that does just that?
