Using Images vs Text for Sub Forums

I have seen this on many websites such as Nasioc.com where the forum uses an image instead of text for things such a vendor sub forum. So when you are viewing the homepage you would read an image instead of text that would link you to a categories sub forum.

I have looked all over the place for how to do this... Can anyone help me?
