Why do so many people rely on the host for backups? You should back your server up yourself regularly, at least once a week. I have lots of content added to my forum every day, so my server is backed up every night at midnight to minimise loss of content should the unthinkable happen.

It could be down to an issue with your host then, raise a support ticket ask them if they have an explanation for it if not ask them to check the logs to check what IP's have accessed cPanel or PHPMyAdmin, you may also want to get your passwords changed.
