Using Custom Templates within existing pages?

I recently got vb4 and am trying to migrate my vb3 skin. It uses a few custom templates which merely contain div tags and some text. In vb3 I could simply edit the vb core files so that these templates were added in the same way as header, headinclude and footer. This doesn't seem to work in vb4. I edited class_core.php and class_boostrap.php and added them to the cache_templates and register_page_templates methods just as the vb authors did for the other global templates. Yet, when I use the vb:raw call, just as you would for header, it doesn't work. This leads me to believe I've missed something. I'm sure now that they are actually setting the values for these global templates someplace else, and I can't locate it.

Keep in mind, I am not authoring new pages, or writing a plugin. I am merely adding additional global templates to the core system so that I can use them in existing templates, like FORUMHOME for example.

Any ideas?
