Dummies' guide to Registering variables to templates?

Hi,

Could someone provide a step by step example to how you would register an existing variable in a different template? Just say I wanted to use {vb:raw totalonline} in navbar, what would you have to do to make the template recognize the variable?

I've read https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=228078 but I'm still confused an example guide like this would help a lot. Thanks!
