Building a new PC from scratch...
Some of you may not know this however I'm an EX-gamer... that's right long before my vbulletin.org days I was playing Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, heck even Joint Operations games w/ a huge modding community. In 2142 we actually had the first unofficial mod that even allowed the hover tanks to hover above water here is a old youtube video where I'm listed in the credits... one of the early version of the modification and if you know the game you also know what's so cool about this video and yes we did line up military style and follow orders:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZebQ2UMYQ4 Another from a site I helped run not too long ago TGW... I'm actually commanding in this one you can hear my voice even saying "Good Job" right at the end lol we stomped em' that campaign it was fun 32 vs 32 for weekends on end I was the General 2 Campaigns running see what you can do when you don't work all the time ROFL... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNI02LZ8F20 I've always been involved one way or another until I started doing online work which has taken me "out of the know" when it comes to computers. The last time I was on the up and up was along the time of the nVidia 8800 GT's and if your a gamer or enthusiast! Long story short.. my Hard Drive failed on my old rig... I loaded my wifes laptop and the network adapter failed so that will be fixed later (laptop) I retired my old rig though seeing as it was so old and currently borrowing my daughters 1gb Vista (eww) so ready to get a new PC in here asap! I want some friendly advice from fellow gamers on here.... Ready? Here's what I have so far... Two Nvidia GeForce 550 Ti Superclocked 1GB http://www.evga.com/products/moreInf...s%20Family&sw= DIY Kit including:
I'm adding in another 12gig's to max out the mobo, same model memory specs here: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...4&sku=C13-5714 Also one more power supply since it lists the 550 at 400 watts min, same identical one to the PS included in the kit and the case has two places for power supplies top and bottom: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...sku=ULT-LSP750 Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...8&sku=M17-7310 Two misc Power supply vibration dampeners: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...9&sku=ULT40450 So all in all, around $1800-$1900 before I call and haggle the price at Tiger Direct, especially considering that DIY Kit as of last week had a 460 card included and they charge tax in only a few states one being mine so not fair imo, I'm not moving out of state to receive a -$108 in taxes that would be silly kwim. I went on several online sites to check the price if I was not building it myself and something comparable to this w/ one 550 graphics card was around $3,500. So fellow gamers, lend me your fingers and type up your thoughts! I would love to purchase all this tonight so it can be shipped and arrive in a timely manner giving me time to assemble and while I did say EX-gamer above when I find time to play, I like to play hard so that's why I maxed it out and besides with this equipment it will make the majority of work I do on here i.e. business related about 100x faster... I did have three 550's to max out the x16 slots on the mobo but imo overkill... let's have your thoughts! THANKS |

I prefer newegg
HDD is a HORRIBLE choice for anything but storage, notice the 5900 rpms? (slightly faster than a normal laptop hdd). Laptop drives are around 5200 rpms "green" drives are 5900 rpms Normal drives are 7200 rpms High Preformance Drives are 10k RPM Then there is SSD In my dream world, I'd run 2x ssd drives, 80-120gb drive for the OS and another 120gb+ drive for games and high demand programs 1-2 big 7200 rpm storage drives for videos, other files, etc. I personally prefer AMD, but i know an i7 is hot stuff, can't really argue about that. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227551 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820167031 While the nvidia video cards might be better as a whole, if you're planning on doing multiple monitor setup (http://bit.ly/ecL2Xy http://bit.ly/dXzI7E) consider going with ATI cards. I'd suggest any of the Dell Ultrasharp widescreen monitors from 2011. I have a U2311h and a U2111h. I wish I could have 2 more 2311h's for widescreen gaming If you're going to run more than 1 video card, you're going to need a MUCH bigger PSU than 750 watts. |

And Zachery I love you bud i.e. same here AMD fanboy myself... I just don't see another mobo that will support AMD w/ six slots for memory within my price range... and only one monitor a 40" samsung and w/ my old Nvidia 260 GTX it runs 1920 x 1080 flawlessly so should be the same, basically two cards for anything outside the norm or for making Crysis 2 run flawlessly. Still debating would not be surprised if I change my mind again just trying to stay within a 1500-1600 budget... wife said so! |

Go with 7200 rpm drives, at least. SSD can be done in a few months/years down the line to give your computer new life.
You don't need 6 slots of memory to get 12gb. My last test build I did I had an amd board with 16gb of ram in 4 slots. Intel boards do tripple channel memory (thus you need 6 slots to stay tripple channel) vs amd boards only doing double channel. I think the AMD 1090T is the best price to preformance (200 bucks for the cpu), but 9/10 times a i7 will winout if other things are near equal. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html |

I'd go with a couple of VelociRaptors, for games and a backup/extra drive for the boot drive, and an SSD as the boot drive. At least until the prices of SSDs start coming down more.

I called and Brian Keuhne (Ext 5811) tweaked that DIY combo, swapped me out the 5200 RPM 1TB for this 7200 rpm, 2TB, 64MB, SATA-6G (the mobo can handle Sata-6g so I like that idea): http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...217&CatId=4357 On top of that he upgraded the 12gb Corsair Memory to 24gb and it ended up running me $1542.42 and before it was right at $1539 in my shopping cart w/ the 1TB 5400 rpm! Now that's still within my price range of $1500-$1600 MINUS the video cards... I know so I bit the bullet and ordered two of the GeForce 550 Ti Superclocked from EVGA Directly at $159, I'll add a third one in at a later time . Quote:
Now it's the waiting game... for the parts so I can build it woohoo! I'll post back as I go maybe teach some how to build their own PC but I did run across this while doing all my research and thought some would find it interesting... http://www.geforce.com/#/Optimize/Gu...-for-under-600 |

JFYI, newegg beats TigerDirect on prices more often than not. I won't buy from TigerDirect, anymore. Sign up for the daily deal alerts with newegg as they have on some good deals quite often.

Like the others said New Egg beats TD prices. I have bought TV's from TD as they had the better price, but that is it.
At the very least get a SSD for your OS. I also like AMD for home computers. Intel for servers I don't know why I have always enjoyed building AMD boxes. Plus they overclock nicely New Egg was actually having a HUGE sale on RAM yesterday I think? It was like 40% off lol |

Edit: Really... thinking back I've found better deals on Tiger... however I guess it depends on what your shopping for at the time, I was pricing this out on NewEgg but stopped short as some of the parts I wanted were not on there, not even the GeForce 550 GTX Ti SuperClocked... KevinL, ohh I know and per my favorite deal site www.slickdeals.net you can still save another 15% up until well 7 minutes from now... Quote:
Always use SlickDeals if you want something imo, we just purchased over $200 in Children's Place clothes for the kids... about $80 and that's the second time as we did the same last year when I saw them having a special. I recently used a code and found brand new dockers, yes Dockers for about $17.50 USD w/ free shipping so 4 new pairs of dress pants for around $70... not too shabby imo. What's that? Yes SlickDeals is a vBulletin powered site... did I do it? No but props to the ones who have worked on it and I love it just saying all sorts of deals, all the time . |

Big mistake on the processor and the graphic card. You should have gone for the newer Sandy Bridge processors which completely outperform the older i7's. Also the HD5770 would have been a much better buy than the GeForce 550.
