how to change Avatar graphic programmically?

Hi
I am writing some code to connect my users to a third party plattform, hence I would like to enable them to let vbulletin update their avatar pic.
But how may I update this profile field?

What I imagine is a field in the userprofile, something like enable_avatar_update
then, I'd like to have vbulletin pulling the avatar images from the plattform once a day for all those who set enable_avatar_update to true.
