IE and the Navbar background

I tried using the stylevars to make the background, tried putting a background in the navbar with css using both background:url and background-image:url and I also tried putting a background on the <tr> and on the <td> with colspan, i also tried creating the header with <div> tags and this as close as I can get to getting the header to look like the rest of the site.
The site is www.huntingdonsite.com/talk/ where vbulletin is and the main site is www.huntingdonsite.com, what am i missing, why won't IE show it like Chrome

Firefox displays the background correctly as well.
