Default AVForums: the vB 3.x forum that looks like XenForo

Hi,

AVForums is a forum running vBulletin 3.8.2 but now it looks like XenForo in some parts: http://www.avforums.com/forums/index...=switch_to_exp

Why? From the announcement:

Quote:
Who created it?
I am not a designer, so I employed the guys at Complete vB to create the new look for us. They have create a lot of vBulletin forum designs, came highly recommended and have produced a new look for us which several other design experts have commended.
The implementation of the new design, however, ran into problems as AVForums is such a complex site. To get the new design online, I employed the services of my friend Kier Darby who was the lead developer of vBulletin and is the co-owner of xenForo. To say he is an expert in vBulletin would be a vast understatement. As a result, the new style has been implemented exceptionally well. Kier's design qualifications are also excellent, and he has helped with further tweaks as we approached launch.
Interesting! I wonder how much Kier charges per hour of job. Maybe US$1,000?

Thank you,
Jonathan

It's good Kier is not putting all his eggs in the Xenoro basket.

I kid, I kid.... I'm shocked they put so much work into revamping VB3.8 style rather than moving to XF already?

I personally do not think it looks like XenForo, but that's just my opinion.

Honestly think the theme I'm using (for free), at least follows a closer look

Trying to make vB look like XenForo is like putting lipstick on a pig.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Plus (and I'm surprised noone has said this yet) - what's the point?
I'm sorry - I don't get the point of trying to make vBulletin look like xenForo.
It's as silly as trying to make vB look like IPB or vice verse.
If you want a xenForo forum - purchase a xenForo license LOL
I personally could not see shelling out one penny of my money for someone to create me an xF skin for my vB forum. That's just silly to me....

All that aside. I don't think your forum looks like xenForo at all tbh.
If that was the purpose - I'd have to grade it a solid D

Sorry.

Jacquii.

You're assuming that the only thing that makes up a forum is cosmetic.

The code in vB's foundation is much more secure than a xenForo. This way they have a reliable forum with the look of xenForo (if you're into that kind of thing). I applaud them for experimenting with the design, but it doesn't matter to me either way because the mods at AVForums are all jerks and no amount of forum customization can ever compensate for that. I agree with BirdOPrey5, why put that much effort into 3.8. They should have at least updated vB first and then had that cosmetically changed. Now they've painted themselves into a corner. Looks like the'll be keeping 3.8 for a while

And you're assuming that vB 4.x series is worth the purchase price which I insist that it's not LOL - I've spent quite a bit of time customizing my own forums. vB 3.8.6 PL1 is superb in my opinion, while vB 4.x (since the day the gold version was released) is a software that's been full of bugs and probably should not have been made available for public download. Even the newest version seems almost ready to go public for alpha testing LOL

At anyrate - I was indeed commenting on the skin, on the cosmetic changes made to the forum. The OP asked for comments on the cosmetics of the design, not the functionality of vBulletin

As for being painted in a corner - my newly redesigned forum has made it into this month's vB.org BOTM voting. The other forum in this month's voting is also running vB 3.8.x series. I like to think that we've painted some fabulous-looking corners

I'm not assuming anything. Each person has to decide for themselves if they want to upgrade or not. Apparently quite a lot of people disagree with you as they have already upgraded. If you don't feel comfortable upgrading at this time then don't. I seem to remember that 3.8 had bugs at one time too. These things get worked out, and they'll get worked out with 4.0 too.

You were the one who made the comment about it making more sense to buy a xenForo license. I simply pointed out why they had very good reasons for not doing that, and instead just making their forum look the way it does.

I was talking about AVForums being painted into a corner. Congratulations on your BOTM submission.

To be honest, if I knew then what I know now, I never would have paid for the upgrade to vb 4. Like everyone else who was hood-winked at the time, we believed in something that is no longer believable. vb 4 will NEVER be as good as 3.8 is/was. Having bugs and fixing them is one thing, but re-introducing the same bugs back into the code over and over again is another.
