How do I tackle this? (Email Verification)

I am not asking for coding help, simply "philosophical" assistance. How would you tackle this?

1) Users will register using facebook connect.
2) They will need to provide an additional @MYSCHOOL.edu email address.
3) A verification link will need to be sent to their name@MYSCHOOL.edu email address.
4) Once they click the verification link they will be moved to CONFIRMED usergroup.

I can't use the default verification system because they will not necc. be connecting with facebook accounts using their school email/domain.

Any idea how I would tackle this? I just need brainstorm. Everything appreciated.
