Alternating Postbit Colours?

I'm sort of new to coding, basically in a thread, I've seen on some forums how post #1 can be the alt1 colour and post #2 can be the alt2 and keep it going as such. I'm running vB 3.8.3 and am just wondering if anyone knows of how to do this?
