Allow users to choose what forums they see??

I know I've seen this somewhere before, but now I cannot find it.

I want users to be able to choose which forums they see. I run a motorcycle forum, but there are forums for firearms, politics, off-topic, NWS, etc which some users just hate.

I know I can do this through user joinable usergroups, but I'd rather not.

So for example, let's say I have the following categories and forums:

Cat 1
- forum 1
- forum 2
- forum 3
Cat 2
- forum 4
- forum 5
- forum 6

I'd like users to be able to choose whether or not to see forum 6, or maybe forum 4, etc.

I'm positive I've seen this mod before, but can't figure out what the title would've been. I've been searching for the past hour and haven't had any luck finding it. Hopefully one of you know what I'm talking about and can point me in the right direction.
