Can I use .htaccess to limit file access to logged in members in one subforum only?

How would I do this? The goal is to limit access to files in a folder (not attachments) to logged in members in one of the subforums. I don't want the files to be hotlinked to other subforums or other sites. All I know so far is that it would be placed at the "protected" folder root. I'm guessing it would need php? Thanks in advance for any help.
