See http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/index.php for an example of how they have their subforums organized neatly in 2 columns opposed to the 'subforum1, subforum2, subforum3' style.

Is there a published hack/theme/style for this?

there are a few mods, I'm guessing if you search by title and use "subforum" you'll find them
