Need help with private thread..

I am trying to set up a online peer group study on my forum. It will be closed to those not invited, the public can read it but can't post to it. Is this possible? How do I create this? How do I single out the users, who can come to it? Is there a password. Do I create a group? Thanks so much. I know this sounds very basic but I'm new to all of this.

Create a forum for it and a usergroup. Set the permissions for the usergroup to be able to write.
