Default Backing up

Oh my god I am so lost, I didn't know what I was getting myself into, I have absolutely know idea what I am doing, it's truly astounding I have got this far though. Till now I have never done anything with computers other than surf the net and post on a few forums.

I have got this forum up and running, don't ask how the head is still spinning. www.myforumplace.com. We have been up and running for just over a week, I have not backed anything up as yet and I am very concerned. I have read heaps but am still at a total lose as how I do this, can someone start with the real basics first and explain the process in layman terms. How where and what do I need to back up.

I do apologizes for asking such basic questions but some help would be appreciated.

BTW I am hosted through Go Daddy

Thanks Vin

Really depends. I don't bother doing any backups myself as my host does a complete back up of files and database every 4 hours and keeps these saved for a rolling week. They're rather very good really and I would highly recommend them.

I would strongly suggest that everybody learn how to do a backup themselves. I've seen many users get screwed when they did something, then wanted a backup, but the backup their host provided was corrupted (of course, then they blame it all on their host when it is really their own fault for not making sure there was a good backup). Learn to do a backup yourself and how to import a backup into a new database yourself. Do this *before* you absolutely need to do it (when your site is down). The time to learn is when you have the time, not when you are in a panic. I think it's great that the OP is already looking into this.

From the manual:
Backing Up The Database via SSH/Telnet or
Backing Up The Database via phpMyAdmin

Restoring The Database via SSH/Telnet or
Restoring The Database via phpMyAdmin

If you don't have shell access, some people have also reported success with these scripts:
MySQLDumper
MySQLHotxcopy
Bigdump

The guys I'm using are top notch Lynne.

They have this soft restore feature, I can go in and restore a file that I have either deleted or want to roll back to an earlier version. All their complete back ups they do are also stored to a seperate server.

When I was upgrading to VB4 I completely screwed the installation and the database and they had everything restored within 15 minutes downtime. Legends to be honest. I should really look into learning how to do backups but at the moment I really have no incentive to learn unless I had to change host, which I won't be doing for some time with any luck.

I second Lynne's advice as well. Don''t rely on your host only for the backups but make your own as well. Also make sure that they are done properly. I have seen quite some forums totally gone because their admins relied on their host about the backups.

Thanks Vin
you go into a HOSTING my hosted site or something like that
then Cpanel you will have to look around, your looking for php administration, it will have an option to do a backup on the server side i think the use starfield or something on godaddy, its a shared server setup so its not actually hosted on godaddy i don't think. but doing a sql dump from there is much better than dumping it through vb

just go to godaddy and search around for HOSTING backup, stuff like that it will also allow a restore through that same area the file will be like myforum.sgl.gz or something like that

if not go daddy does do weekly back up automatically but like lynne says you should know how to do it ..you may have to restore it sometime..

I would never trust anyone with my data, even the biggest companies can't mess up.
I make a backup every night and it's mailed to me, in case the host just vanishes and is nowhere to be found.

ps.. my host is top notch as well

Thanks everyone.

I have managed to back up through my Godaddy control panel. I don't feel entirely comfortable with it just stored there though, should I back up to a separate data base and if so has anyone got any suggestions where I might find one?
