At my message board we have a problem with some people posting tons of spam on the boards, and we want a way to kind of controll their posting w/o them being banned or limiting the other posters posting. Well that got me thinking and I wanted to know if this is possible...

Would it be possible to have a hack where you could set the flood control time only for cetrain posters? That way only some posters that were acting up and spamming could post once every 5 minutes (so they don't post as often, causing them to not post more crap) while everyone else has the normal flood control settings?

Any type of response on if this could be done would be great I would love to see this feature since this is a problem at my message board.

Thanks in advance

that would be kind of nice... but then playing favourites to some members is unfair... i think ... if there was such a hack, it would be nice to be able to access the flood control options from their profile -> admin options link

Well, you would need to add a column to the user table entitled "floodchecktime", which by default is say 0, meaning it uses the default one.

You would have to edit the newthread.php and newreply.php. You would need to add, around where the censor stuff check is, a check for if the user is not violating his individual floodcheck (if floodchecktime <> 0).

Not that hard, but I don't have the time for it right now

I might do it when I get back from vacation in 2 weeks. Would the tiem be set in the cp?

I don't really know, its just that we have an one admin that is not on much, and he also does not like to ban people. So this was the only thing I could think of to solve the problem, I just didn't know if it could be done. You know, kinda use it like a punishment if a member is acting up. Then if they stop spamming and post normal we could set them to normal flood control time

Why not just remove their posting privileges?

Our admin just doesn't like doing that for some reason, he would rather have the mods (me and some other people) take care of it. But our main spammer has a rotating IP so an IP ban would do nothing

well, he could register under various usernames, so even the floodcheck cannot prevent that.

You have a point there, but it would still be a nice feature to have. And a lot of the spamming is because of people that are trying to raise their post totals, so the flood controll would stop them (since making a new name would pretty much defeat the purpose of it). As for the other spammers, we could take care of them some other way...
