I like the CMS recent thread widget but I want to remove the thread preview text to get more on the page. How would I do that?

Just edit the template and take it out. If you click Configure on the widget, it should tell you what template you are using. You may either edit that one, or copy that one and take out what you want and then put the name of the new one in the Configure screen.
