I have a fairly new forum up (less than 6 months) and I never see anything come across from Google alerts regarding indexing. Is there something I can do to change this?

Get more backlinks to your site if you're having problems getting indexed.

We're using vbseo for our site map.. is there anything else that can be done?

You can use vBSEO for everything, like rewriting URL's, etc.
If you haven't submitted your site to search engines, then go here: http://www.addme.com and submit your forums to many search engines.
