Looking for a registration mod?
On my vBulletin 3.8.2 Forum, I installed the mod that measures the time it takes for a new registration and if it takes less than 30 seconds or a minute (like a bot typically takes just seconds). If that happens it is deleted and it works great, very little problem with spammers.
Is there a VB4 version of that mod, so I can stop those automatic registrations dead in there tracks, yes! Jerry - KC |

That old mod was developed when the bots were just learning to solve the captchas. Since then, we know the Q&A blocks all but real humans (and many of them too!), so just use that.

I don't remember seeing anything in the registration portion of 4.0.2 install about Q&A blocks. How would I add that and thanks . . .

In the Control Panel - Human Verifications Manager, registration is checked, but the only thing I see is the scrambled letters, same as in 3.8.x. Is that what you mean by Q&A blocks?
Will that stop the Bots? Cause I have almsot 50 registrations in about 10 days and no posts yet from any of them? I thought that meant they were Bots??? |

That doesn't sound right, in 402pl1 you should see a choice of 4 options, one of which is Q&A Verification. You may need to go to vb.com and look around about adminCP being out of whack.
50 inactive registrations in 10 days doesn't necessarily mean they're all bots. But if all you have is image verification then it's likely they're automated bots. Sometimes you can tell by the emails or the names. |

Aha . . . I found the Q&A part. It only accepts one question? Is that all I need and what would be a good one?
This is what I added for now: Question: How many months are in one year? Answer: 12 Will that be a good enough question? And what does this mean in the question entry box? Regular Expression You may require the input field to match a regular expression (PCRE). Thanks |

The question is good, but you need at least one more answer - "twelve". Maybe more if your users speak more languages. You never told us anything about your site, but if you can get away with a more specific question you may block more actual humans. e.g. "In what year was the Mustang introduced?" would work fine on an antique car forum.
I wouldn't worry about the regex. I see the Help file doesn't explain it. Perhaps it's just there for future use when the bots get better at answering simple questions (and they will). I've seen some stuff over at vb.com about it if you're really interested enough to look it up, and there may be something in the manual. |
