Right now my forum says "Username is online" or offline. Instead of text I want to put in images that show online or offline. Where do I need to be to change this? Just need a nudge in the right direction..

Perhaps you are missing images from the style you are using? most styles will show the alt text if the image is missing.

I took a look from where I got the template and the style just does not use images it appears. Where can I change this? What file or section of code?

This can easily be changed by editing the postbit_onlinestatus template.
