I would like to let unregistered users see/search member list in order to avoid similar user names. Is that possible without letting these guests also see more member info?

Why not just use the Ajax registration checker to make sure the username hasn't been taken?

Thanks, but I want the users to check that their choice is not too similar to other usernames.

Lol if they choose a username, and the default vB tells them its already taken.
So this is a built in function

This has been asked recently.
You will first need to tell what you consider "similar username", then you will need to figure out how to programatically check for those similarities, a very complicated task |

I know that vB checks identical user names. The members tend to choose quite similar names, this is what I want them to avoid.

The you will still need to start by stating what you consider 'similar'.

Well, I thought that could be up to the users to decide, just by checking the member list before choosing a user name.

Well you will need to tell the server first which names to show/list to the potential user. How to create a list with 'similar' names? What are the rules for a match?

You misunderstand me, Marco. I want to show the existing forum member list to unregistered users. As simple as that. No rules regarding similarities and which names to show.
![]() The reason why I do not simply change the setting for this usergroup in adminCP is that unregistered members then also would see member profiles, and that I do not want. |
