[Hatching an Idea] Username Replaced with Realname
I was thinking about the options of replacing the username with the real name of the user. There are many ways to go about this, but I was wondering what the bomb proof options would be. Is there a hook for displaying user names? Can I just have a permanent phrase replace, like a hook that runs after an update script to make sure this item does not change.
I think the phrase replace would be the fastest option, but it might break with vB updates, so I'm just a little skittish about using that. I have no idea if there are hooks for displaying a name on the post bit, thread bit, and everywhere else the username shows up, if there was it would be awfully helpful. It would also be great if there was a phrase for display name. It's default would be your username, but then you could change it to anything the admin wanted. It would make edits like this much easier and it seems that a lot of people are trying to do what I'm doing. (Or there are few, but they are very vocal.) A phrase replace that is run after every install, but one that is done automatically, for example if there was a hook into upgrade_complete the product would run on that hook and just do the string_replace it did before, if it found any changes it would fix it on the spot. Any ideas? What's my best option? |
