Upgrade 3.6 to 3.8

I know how to do a regular upgrade. However I want to create a test board on my site and get the new 3.8.4 running before I make that part live and take down the 3.6.11. I have a backup made from last night, I want to now make that on the test board and then upgrade it to 3.8.4. Anyone want to explain some of how to do that?
