I can't find the steps involved in adding a Chipin widget to a forum post. Chipin widgets are of the form <object ...>...</object>. Something to do with BBCode, maybe?

Any help much appreciated.

If it needs bbcode, then you will probably have to create it. You'll have to look at the whole <object> code and see what changes per user and make that a param or option in your bbcode.
