Default Scared

Sorry...don't know if I should even be posting this but i'm worried

I have just recived a email from the police, via the contact admin form on my site, saying

"It appears that a member of your forum is being harassed by other members. I have been appointed as the investigator"

I have not seen any harrasment going on, on my site. Could I be in trouble???

Essentially, and dependant on what country you are in:-

They should have given more detail, and possibly wouldnt just fone up.

Can you be more specific.

I would verify that it really is someone from the police. Then, if they were legit, I'd contact them to find out what is going on.

No way they can do you anything, dont give them your name as if they were real cops, they would find it very easily.
It's more likely that members could be in dangeour, but you would be in some countries a little punished, but nothing much, maybe Public "Sorry" or something like that.
You could be also asked to pay online, but dont do that!

Dont give them any private things at all. Go in local police if you're scared, and give them these info.

I would sincerly think this is a prank.

However as a forum owner you are responsible.

So do the responsible thing, and check this guy out.

If indeed the phone number / email are genuine, then find the details for that police station, and contact them on their main office number.

Then ask to speak to Mr X , and see if it is indeed legitimate.

However seems to me a tad "prankish"

If they gave further details, such as links, user names etc. Then that is something you will have to investigate.

Generally they can get your real name quite easily and quickly, from whois.

I see you have privacy on your domain. And seem to be based in US

Isnt the MET office based in UK ?

Generally, if there is an issue, legal or otherwise the server people are asked to intervene, initially... dependant on the issue

If your forum is big, maybe some small hacker, who made himself looklike real, and ask for money if you dont want to go on court.
