Child Board Layout

I have a forum that has one section with quite a few child boards and I want to change the layout.

Say I have CATEGORY 2, then say 8 rooms in that section. Room 8 has 12 child boards, so when I click on room 8, the 12 child boards are at the top while normal room 8 posts are at the bottom below the child boards.

Can I change the layout so when viewing room 8, the room 8 posts are at the top and the child boards are below them.

I have a heavy modified theme and due to that fact, the original theme creator will not support it now (understandable and quite correct).

Anybody have an idea where to start?
