Changing threadmarkers

I would like to change the icons inside each forum subtopic For example I have three sections of my forum, cars helicopters and airplanes. I've been able to get the correct icons for each main section, however I want to have icons (like helicopters for the helicopter forum) to have a helicopter to the left of each thread title.

These are the files I need to have customized for each forum

For the listing of all the topics in a given forum using the prefix heli_ work on all the topics. When I tried creating files like I have listed above with the artwork I wanted, a prefix of heli_ and the files named correctly it does not change the icon for threads within a topic. Anyone have any suggestions how I can do this? I've tried searching and found nothing..
