I've been using UBB for a while and have decided to switch to VB. I was quite experienced with UBB hacks and all and was wondering how I'd get started modifying VB? Is it the same concept?

And is there anything else I should know about it? I'm about to install it tomorrow as soon as my host installs PHP 4.0 on the server, SQL is already on it...

well, i went from UBB to vB, and heres what I have to say

I didn't, and still don't, know anything about Perl/CGI, but I became pretty descent when it came to hacking and customizing my UBB(I can show it to you if you want)

I know absolutely nothing about PHP, and I'm totally lost at the moment when it comes to hacking, but I'm new to it, so I'll get better. Customizing on the other hand is completely template driven, and is a heck of alot easier to do than UBB.

Overall, vB is a much greater product and is extremely easy to use. The only thing it lacks is a "nice to look at" control panel

Thanks, that sums it up quite nicely...do you know where I can get hacks for it?

here, atleast for now. Some of the hackers are working on a ubbhackers type site, don't know when it will be out though, should be soon.
A good way to find hacks would be to search for posts with [RELEASE] in the title, as most people release their hacks with that prefix to make it noticeable.

Another thing to be noted, vB's coding is much, MUCH cleaner than the cluttered mess of UBB.

as well as the clutter, and resource hog known as UltraBoard, which was the first board I used.

vB is the fastest board, the easiest board, and the best coded board that I've used so far.

So hacks are basically just a matter of following the directions? Like in UBB to find something then add/replace it?

So is it possible to move my UBB member info (names, info, and # of posts) over to VB? I heard it was, but how, is it in the CP?

you can move your entire UBB, posts, members and all, into vB. Just look in the CP and you will see the import functions .

Welcome aboard!

And yes, hacking is the same, though there is less requirement for hacking here as most features that were hacked in UBB are already present and the good hacks (meaning those that are most popular/useful) will likely be incorporated into future releases .
