Default Upgrading To Vista 64bit

I currently have a Dell Vostro 1700 Laptop with the following specs:

Operating System: Windows Vista™ Business (6.0, Build 6001)

Service Pack 1 (6001.vistasp1_gdr.090302-1506)

BIOS: Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A07

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5670 @ 1.80GHz

Memory: 2046MB RAM

DirectX Version: DirectX 10

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT

Dedicated Memory: 241 MB

Current Mode: 1440 x 900 (32 bit) (60Hz)

I also want 4GB RAM to go with that..

Questions:

How much would it all cost? (? GBP)

Can i run Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit?

Can my laptop handle 64bit OS's?

How much would it cost for DELL to install the 4GB and OS?

Thanks!

Yes, yes you can. Note that you cannot upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit, you must do a fresh install.

Give Dell a call. However, I suggest you just do it yourself, as long as you have some sort of technical knowledge.

Take a look around Google UK for the best prices, I use Dabs.com for a lot of my purchases, you can order RAM and OS from them together.

you can run the software version of the 64bits if it let you install, but you will miss the performances... i have Vista Ultimate 64b on my Mac, and it does not care what CPU i have, it's a Mac anyway so it does not recognize my Intel... (ok, it's a 128bits SSE4 engine so i don't care)

Save your money and Download the Windows 7 RC this week. Upgrade to that and then upgrade to the final when its released. No reason to go to Vista 64 when Windows 7 will be available soon. Better performance, better user interface, better applications. Windows 7 will even do better with only 2 GB of RAM.

in that case you'd have to purchase 2, 2gb sticks of ram, try www.crucial.com they're quite cheap for ram, however it all depends if your motherboard is capable of using 2 gb stick of ram!
