Default Access based on answers at registration

Hi All,

I have a question. Is there a modification that would allow to grant access to special private forums based on answer during registration. I would like to create few private forums apart from what is accessible and visible by everyone.

Thank you in advance.

EB

Someone created this in the 3.5 days (and maybe it was ported to later version as well). Try searching on Harry Potter and HP terms here on vb.org for it (you can use it for anything).

Here is one but I thought there were like two others.

Thank you for your suggestion. I actually did not have in mind to put them to special usergroup. They still could be simply in Registered Usergroup but would have additional access to Private Forums.

Hmm, maybe a password protected forum would be a solution. You might want to take a look at doing something like that rather than creating a new user group. Having said that, I think usergroups may be a better way to go in terms of additional layers of security, i.e. permissions and setting the usergroup at registration time based on the answers provided.

well thats excaktly what this mod does..

https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=204312

the reason it was made, was to allow uses into special groups depending on the
code they enter dureing registration.

Exsample :
Usefull when haveing multple clans in a forum, but they want restricted acces to each
so make it work with the usergroups and forums, then in the end add a promotional code
when entered they will be droppped into the "predefined" categori.

I am sorry, it seems that I am not really clear. Let me describe this in more details.

Recently I asked on another thread following question. Is there a way to create a forum that access can be granted individually regardless usergroup membership. Such forum should be only visible to users for whom this access was granted to. . Based on advice I followed three steps:
  1. I have created new "private forum".
  2. I edited forum permissions and set all usergroups to "no" for access to this "private forum".
  3. I left users as they were and I used the access masks option when editing a user and I allowed them access individually to this "private forum".

So as you see the results achieved had nothing to do with putting people to special usergroup. I was hoping that somehow similar strategy could be automated at registration. For now I want to add access to "private forum" I have to do it manually to each user I want to give access to.

Your proposed concept is a good one, but I really would like to avoid creating special usergroups with permissions to special forums.

I hope I was more clear.

Thank you.

EuroBeat2, you need to create a usergroup for every discussion area that you want to be private. Then, when you want to grant access to someone for that area, make one of their additional usergroups into the usergroup for that discussion area (so that their primary usergroup stays the same).

PB Usergroup Choice On Registration is a mod that will help you do this at the time of registration. You will have to fuss with the code yourself to get it to do what you want - or ask the mod developer how to change it such that additional usergroups are supported... But at least it's getting somewhere.

That is exactly what I am trying to avoid!

Why are you avoiding it? It's not a bad thing if the group is strictly used as an additional group instead of a primary group. No one gets listed in the group, since their display group is their primary group - so the group doesn't display. The only time it's seen is back end for the admin.
