Default Calendar tweaking and options

This is our basic calendar. I think it comes with vBulletin.
http://www.wildlifegardeners.org/forum/calendar.php

First, we'd like to be able to remove members birthdays. How do we go about doing that?

Second, the events that have been added to the calendar do not appear unless one is registered and logged on. We would like the events to appear to guests. How do we make them visible to those who are registered and logged on as well as to guests?

Third, the basic vBulletin calendar is too basic for us and the entries are difficult to read because they are all scrunched together. Are there other calendars to select to use at our site somewhere?

This is an example of a calendar that seems to have more space-
http://www.deadhookforums.com/calendar.php?
And, their events are clickable in that when I click on something I am interested in, I go to another page that provides more information on the event. How do we do that?

--------------- Added [DATE]1231428009[/DATE] at [TIME]1231428009[/TIME] ---------------

If I have not worded this properly to be able to receive help, please let me know and I will try to re-word things differently.

Yes. There is a calendar included and that is it.

AdminCP > Calendars > Calendar Manager > edit the appropriate calendar > Show Birthdays on this Calendar > No

AdminCP > Calendars > Calendar Permissions > edit the appropriate usergroup "Unregistered/Not Logged In" in this case

No, there's just the one calendar. You might try searching for a modification though. For instance, one of my forums uses both the Event Forums and Event Attendance mods. They're being used in a member's only calendar, so I can't really show how they work.

As for why the layout is so large, I don't know. They are using version 3.5 of vB though and I only started using vB at version 3.6. So maybe the layout between versions changed which condensed everything...? And all events are clickable. They all go to their own page. See the December page of one of my calendars and you'll see that events are clickable by default.

I was able to change the first setting so thank you very much for your help on that.

I found where to change the second setting. "Can View Others' Events" I take it this should be set to yes? When I attempt to check the yes, I receive a pop up that tells me custom permissions for this usergroup need to be enabled. This is somewhere else in the Admin panel? Would this be something I could locate on my own by referring to the vB Manual?

In the Admin panel it provides an area where we can add a new calendar. I assumed this meant there were other styles of calendar out there and evidently we are only able to use the same default calendar more than once at the site. I was thinking there might be more attractive calendars out there that would be easier on the eyes.

This vB user has 3.7 and their calendar seems to have a larger layout too. Do you think this could be a default and the reason why our calendar isn't expanding is because we don't currently have more than one event on any date?

I like the way your calendar allows someone to click for more information. Why do you think our events aren't clickable?

This particular hack seems to do what we wanted-

We're 3.7 and that's 3.6 which makes us nervous.

* When a new event is created in a calendar, an associated thread is created in the linked forum.
* Links to events in the calendar are forwarded to the associated thread, or optionally a seperate New Event button can be added with a minor template edit.
* New thread links in the event forum are redirected to a new event form.
* A summary can be shown at the top of the event forum which shows the up and coming events over the next 'x' days.
* The date and time shown in the thread and post title, is calculated on the current viewing users timezone. In other words, times always show in the users timezone, not forced to GMT.
* Full moderation support.
* Editing a thread or event, will update its associated event/thread.

What do you think?

It was no problem.

That screen is for setting a custom permission for that specific calendar. If you just want to set the Unregistered usergroup to be able to see events in more of a general sense, go to:

Usergroups > Usergroup Manager > Edit the Unregistered usergroup > scroll to Calendar Permissions > Can View Others' Events > Yes

You'll understand this more if you create more than just one calendar. The Custom Permissions are so that you can have those people be able to view events on one calendar but not another.

And yes, this should be in the manual. I'm not one for manuals though.

No, there aren't other layouts or anything like that. Think of it like this. If you had a site that catered to the public as well as members of a paid sort of membership group, you could have a public calendar as well as a members only calendar. This is what I have set up on one forum. The public can't even see the second calendar, much less the events on it.

Yes, I believe that's it. More events push the boxes out and they appear larger.

No idea off the top of my head. I just registered at your site and I can click on events just fine.

I use that mod on my 3.6 board and the fact that it hasn't been updated is the very reason why I haven't updated that forum to 3.7. I don't want to take the risk, but that's just me. The coder of the mod seems to have dropped development of it. Without the calendar, our site is MUCH less useful to the group. If you look at page 39 of that mod's thread, you'll see that someone has been able to get it to work on 3.7. So, you could give it a shot. If I were you, I'd use a test board to try it out first though.

You might want to add your requests for more calendar features to the Feedback and Suggestions thread on vB's main site here. I started that thread since calendars are so important to one of my boards.

Got it! Thank you ever so much yet again. That usergroup had permission to view the calendar but I totally missed the permissions for viewing events.

Too risky for us. They'd never agree to try an unsupported hack and I'd have to agree. This is only our third week live. We're too new, too inexperienced, and we're staring down a migration to 3.8 sometime in the not so distant future.

The manual has been a big help to us or my post count here would be in the hundreds. Search feature here has been a big help too. Once we become more familiar with the language used in the manual, it will most probably become more user friendly. Currently, we struggle.

I posted in the thread you suggested. Many of the comments made by the others were valid. Comparing the features vB has, it's somewhat surprising our calendar is so lacking.

Many sites never use the calendar, so it gets overlooked as far as features goes. For some reason, the smaller communities that have physical meetings and such don't account for a very large audience, I guess.
