What are the chances that someone can hack me through the vB search box or a vB shoutbox plugin? can they type in sql statements through here or upload exploited scripts?

The default vBulletin search? No, if you could, I'm sure we would see so many boards hacked right now. A modification is a different story, however, as no one can guarantee how safe it is.

It depends what version of vBulletin you have. 3.6.x and prior, there is a very hi chance, as exploits are already released for older things, after they become obsolete.
But newer versions, I doubt it. Shoutbox's are easily exploitable, FYI.
